Soft Drink Carbonation

Soft Drink Carbonation
Messer’s Gourmet food-grade carbon dioxide plays an indispensable role in as a core ingredient in the production of carbonated beverages.
Messer’s Gourmet food-grade carbon dioxide is characterized by distinctive physical and chemical properties. At 4 °C and under 3–4 bar pressure, advanced automated filling processes enable the gas to dissolve optimally into beverages at a ratio of 1 : 1.45, creating a stable carbonated solution. This not only enhances the sensory quality of the beverage, making it more refreshing and enjoyable, but also provides an effective preservation effect. In beverage filling, Messer ensures customers benefit from a stable and reliable supply of high-purity carbon dioxide, while also offering the EcoVap-C liquid CO₂ cold energy recovery automatic control system. The system efficiently captures the cold energy released during the vaporization of liquid CO₂ and transfers it to the circulating chilled water. As a result, it reduces the power consumption of refrigeration units, improves energy efficiency, lowers carbon emissions, and supports long-term sustainability goals.

Liquid Nitrogen Dosing

Liquid Nitrogen Dosing
Messer’s Gourmet food-grade Liquid nitrogen dosing is a proven solution, broadly used in soft drink production to ensure stronger packaging and fresher taste.
At the heart of liquid nitrogen dosing is a simple yet powerful effect: when liquid nitrogen enters the container, it flashes into gas and instantly builds pressure. In that split second, the expanding nitrogen sweeps out headspace oxygen while bracing the walls of the package with a stable internal cushion. As a result, non-carbonated beverages can achieve the same packaging strength and shelf-life protection as carbonated drinks—without the need for added carbon dioxide. By dosing liquid nitrogen at -196°C just before sealing, manufacturers harness its rapid vaporization and nearly 700-fold expansion to unlock reliable value across production. The Advantages of Liquid nitrogen dosing: • Prevents package deformation: The generated pressure (about 1.5–2 bar) keeps aluminum cans firm and PET bottles rigid, preserving shape and appearance throughout handling. • Reduces residual oxygen: Nitrogen expansion purges oxygen from the headspace, lowering levels to below 1% and slowing oxidation, which extends shelf life by 30%–50%. • Preserves flavor and nutrition: The low-oxygen environment protects sensitive nutrients like vitamin C, allowing beverages to retain their fresh taste and natural qualities. • Enables packaging lightweighting: With internal support from nitrogen pressure, aluminum cans can be made up to 70% lighter and PET bottles around 30% lighter, reducing material use and lowering carbon emissions.
