Messer Opens Chengdu Competence Center to Strengthen Technical Service Capacity in China
Shanghai, China – [October 15, 2025] – Messer, the world’s largest privately held expert in industrial, medical and specialty gases, today announced the opening of a new Competence Center in Chengdu, China. As Messer’s second major technical center in the country after Nanjing, the new facility expands the company’s technical capabilities and strengthens its service network across Southwest China, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to customer partnership and localized innovation.
Located in Chengdu’s High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, within Messer’s local plant, the Chengdu Competence Center covers about 1,000 square meters. It serves as a key platform for bringing Messer’s global technologies to China and driving their localization through in-house design and equipment development. Supported by a team of experienced application specialists, the Center enables faster response to customer needs and helps address complex technical challenges with proven, efficient gas solutions.
“As China’s industrial sector is accelerating its transition toward greener production and decarbonization, our Chengdu Competence Center is well positioned to contribute its technological expertise and support customers achieve their ambitious sustainability goals,” said Marc Wachter, CEO of Messer China.
Four Key areas of Application
The Chengdu Competence Center provides a hands-on environment for live demonstrations, testing, and training — covering four key application areas: welding and cutting, combustion, food and beverage, and water treatment.

Welding and Cutting — Equipped with MAG and TIG welding machines, a handheld laser cutter machine, and a hydrogen cutting system, the lab enables customers and Messer experts to jointly optimize process parameters and improve welding performance. Advanced diagnostic tools help identify the root causes of technical challenges with precision.

Combustion Technology — The center features an open test stand for oxy-fuel burners with capacities of up to 4 MW, supported by a control room for detailed measurement and analysis. This setup bridges R&D with real production, as burners and control systems are designed and validated on-site before delivery.
Food and Beverage — Demonstrating Messer’s proprietary quick-freezing and CO₂ cold recovery technologies, this area presents solutions that enhance energy efficiency and product quality while reducing emissions. A cryogenic grinding unit further increases productivity and helps preserve natural flavor and freshness.

Water Treatment — Demonstrations highlight the dissolution of oxygen, ozone, and carbon dioxide in water for efficient and eco-friendly treatment of drinking water, process water, and wastewater. The center also features a system for precise dissolved oxygen control in aquaculture research and related applications.
These areas are just the beginning. As one of Messer’s seven global competence centers, the Chengdu Center, leveraging its global network, will bring more advanced technologies to China and support the growth of local industries.
